01 · What this is
A brand that finishes things
KAAL makes watches in closed, numbered series and retires each design permanently when the last piece ships.
Series 01 is twenty watches. One case design, four dials: Emerald 01–06, Midnight 07–10, Champagne 11–14, Ivory 15–20. Day ring, twenty four hour counter, pointer date. Two tone stainless steel bracelet, gold tone bezel, water resistant. ₹5,999 a piece, shipping within India included, five working days to the door.
Every case is finished by hand, by people who have spent their working lives doing this and nothing else. Every piece is opened, checked and closed again before it is boxed. Inside every one of them, a Japanese Seiko Epson movement, backed twenty four months from delivery.
When number twenty ships, Series 01 closes. There is no second run, no Mark II, no anniversary reissue, and no quiet return in a different strap.
02 · The name
काल means time, and only time
In Hindi and Sanskrit, काल, kaal, means time. A watch has one job, and the name is that job.
A watch brand named after time and its ending, selling a design it kills after twenty pieces, is not a coincidence to be explained away in a footer. It is the spine of the thing.
KAAL means time.
In the same language, it names an era, one that ends and is remembered.
This matters commercially and not only poetically. Limited edition is a claim every brand makes and no buyer believes, because it is usually reversible and usually reversed. Naming a brand after endings makes the retirement read as what this brand is rather than what it is promising. A trait is believed. A promise is discounted.
03 · Why twenty
Scarcity you can count, not scarcity you are shouted at
There is no countdown timer on this site. No red badge, no only 3 left, no popup. Those devices all signal the same thing to the person this brand is written for: the seller is anxious to sell. Anxiety is the opposite of exclusivity.
What the site does instead is let the scarcity be visible and silent. Twenty cells. The ones that are gone are struck through. A hairline down the side of the page carries twenty ticks and scratches out the ones that have been taken. Nobody is told to hurry. You can count.
The sight of a struck number does the entire job a countdown timer does, without any of the cost to the brand, because it is a fact rather than a tactic.
Twenty is also a real constraint, not a chosen number. Cases finished individually by hand, each one opened and inspected before it is packed, is a process that does not scale by wanting it to. Twenty is what this design gets.
04 · Who it is for
Most people are trying to disappear into the crowd
Twenty of you are not.
Most products are built to be agreeable to as many people as possible. That is a sound way to sell a great deal of something. It is a very poor way to mean anything.
A watch that would suit everybody is a watch that says nothing about the person wearing it, and saying something is most of what a watch is still for. Nobody needs one to know the time. What is left, once the phone in your pocket has taken that job, is what it says about the wrist it is on.
This is not for someone who needs a watch to speak for them. It is for someone who has already been heard.
What Series 01 asks of an owner is not money. Six thousand rupees is not a filter and was never meant to be one. What it asks is a willingness to wear something almost nobody else has and not explain it: to be comfortable that the person across the table will not recognise the brand, and to not need them to.
That is a smaller group than the market for watches. It is supposed to be. Twenty pieces cannot be for everyone, and a brand that tried to make them for everyone would have to stop being worth owning first.
The twenty are not a customer list
They are the first twenty people who decided this was worth being early to. They own numbered pieces of a design that will never be made again, bought at the lowest price this brand intends to ask. Everything that comes after has to be worth showing to them first, which is a harder standard than a launch to strangers and the reason it is the one being used.
05 · The price
₹5,999, and why it will not stay here
Twenty pieces at ₹5,999 is ₹1,19,980 if every single one sells. Against the cases, the hand finishing, the boxes, the courier, the payment fees and the advertising it takes to reach twenty strangers who have never heard the name, Series 01 does not make money. It was never built to.
The first series is priced to be entered, not to be profitable.
A brand with no owners has nothing to say and no reason to be believed. A brand with twenty owners who each chose their own number, wore the thing, and can be asked what it is actually like, has a beginning. That is what Series 01 is buying, and the price is what it costs to buy it.
It is a decision that only makes sense once. The designs already in work are more ambitious than this one: more of the cost sitting in the part of a watch you cannot see, harder dials, more hours of hand finishing per piece. They will be priced for what they are, because by then the brand will not be paying to introduce itself.
So this is not a sale and there is no timer on it. It is simply the lowest price KAAL intends to ask, on the only series whose price was set by what the brand needed rather than by what the watch is worth.
Anyone buying into Series 01 is buying early rather than buying cheap. Those are different things, and only one of them is still available later.
06 · The number
Choose the dial. Then choose your number
Every number from 01 to 20 was given its dial before this site went live. Tap a dial and you see the numbers it still has; pick one. You see exactly what is coming before you pay.
- Emerald
- 01–06. Green that reads black until the light finds it. Sunray brushed, lacquered, cut by the same gold bezel every piece carries.
- Midnight
- 07–10. The one that disappears at a dinner table and does not at a window.
- Champagne
- 11–14. The loudest of the four, and still quiet. A full champagne dial is a decision, not a default.
- Ivory
- 15–20. A pale dial shows every flaw in a finish, which is exactly why it is in the series.
Each dial holds only the numbers it was given. When a dial's numbers are gone, that dial is gone. No restock, no second batch in the popular colour.
And the number is yours in a way a colour never is. Numbers already carry private meaning: a birthday, a jersey, a date that matters to one person and nobody else.
One piece per number. A number cannot be reserved, only bought.
07 · How it is made
The part that is actually alive
A watch is a case, a dial, a bracelet, and one part that is actually alive. The movement is the only thing in there keeping time. Everything else is housing.
So it is named: a Japanese Seiko Epson quartz movement, in all twenty pieces, backed for twenty four months from delivery.
The movement is also the only component a photograph cannot show you, which is why most brands at this price never name theirs: the specification says "quartz movement" and the reader is invited not to notice the sentence has no subject. Naming the supplier is a claim that can be tested against the watch in your hand inside the seven day window, at no cost to you, and that is exactly why it is worth making. The whole of it, including why quartz and not automatic, is here.
Twenty four months, not twelve, because a movement that is going to fail fails early and a brand that believes its supplier can afford to say so. The movement only: not the strap, not the glass, not a scratch you put there. The heart.
- Movement
- Japanese Seiko Epson quartz, driving day at twelve, twenty four hour at nine and pointer date at six off the one movement. Backed twenty four months from delivery.
- Made in
- India. Designed, assembled and finished here, around a movement from Japan.
- Case
- Finished by hand, each one worked individually, which is why no two are perfectly identical, and why that is the point.
- Dial
- Four across the series. Day ring, twenty four hour counter, pointer date, legible at arm's length in daylight.
- Bracelet
- Two tone stainless steel, gold tone bezel on every piece in the series.
- Water resistance
- Rain is not an event. Caught in weather, washed at a basin, worn through a downpour: none of that is a story.
- Inspection
- Every piece opened, checked and closed again before it is packed. None of the twenty ships unseen.
- Dispatch
- Five working days, order to door, anywhere in India. The inspection is inside those five days, not after them.
Nothing leaves on a Friday because the week is ending.
08 · The rules of the house
Seven days. And we will not sell to you again
Wear it. If it is not you, send it back unworn and unmarked inside seven days and it is refunded to the original payment method. No reason is required and none will be asked.
And KAAL will not sell to you again.
Your number goes back into the twenty, and somebody else gets it. That is not a threat, and it is not aimed at the customer. It is what a closed edition means when the closure is real: the piece has to go back to being available to somebody, and the edition cannot have twenty one owners.
It also says something the brand cannot say any other way. An unconditional refund with no interrogation is expensive to offer and easy to abuse, which is exactly why only a seller who is confident offers one. Claims are cheap. A policy that can be used against you is not.
Your statutory rights are untouched by any of this, and the full terms live in the legal pages.
09 · What it is not
The things this brand has decided against
- No invented testimonials. The first reviews will come from the twenty who own a number. Invented social proof is the fastest available way to lose exactly the person this is written for.
- No comparison to other brands. Naming a rival borrows their frame and argues on their ground.
- No discount, no urgency banner, no email capture popup. Every one of them tells the reader the seller needs the sale more than they need the watch.
- No handcrafted-luxury-heritage adjective stack. The site states facts and lets the reader draw the conclusion, because a conclusion someone reaches themselves is held far more firmly than one handed to them.
- No restock. The moment Series 01 comes back in a different strap, every future series is worth what this one is worth minus its credibility, and there is no way to buy that back.
10 · What comes after
Series 02, and the shape of the next few years
Series 01 closes when the twentieth piece ships. What follows is a different design, a different edition, and a different price, not a continuation of this one.
The intent is a brand built out of finished things rather than a catalogue that only grows. Each series closed, numbered, retired, and better than the one before it, because each one starts with owners the last one earned rather than with strangers who have to be bought.
That is also why the prices move in one direction. Every series after this one begins with something Series 01 did not have, people who already own a KAAL and can say what it is like, so none of them will have to be priced to buy an introduction.
Anyone who wants to be in the earliest part of that is, by definition, on a clock that has twenty positions on it.
11 · Questions
The things people actually ask
What is KAAL?
An Indian watch brand that sells in closed, numbered series and retires each design permanently once the last piece ships. Series 01 is twenty numbered watches at ₹5,999, one case design and four dials.
Why does KAAL only make twenty watches?
Because the retirement is the brand rather than a promotion for it. The name means time, and time does not run twice; a design that is genuinely finished after twenty pieces is that idea carried out rather than described.
Can I choose the dial colour?
Yes. Choose a dial, then choose your number from the ones that dial still has. Each dial holds only the numbers it was given, so when they are gone, that dial is gone.
Will the price go up after Series 01?
That is the intention. Series 01 is priced to bring the first twenty owners in, and does not profit at ₹5,999 once cases, finishing, packaging, shipping, payment fees and advertising are counted. Later series are designed to be more ambitious and are intended to be priced for what they are.
Who is it for?
People who want an object almost nobody else owns and do not need it explained. It is not built to suit everyone, and twenty pieces could not be.
What if I do not like it?
Seven days, unworn and unmarked, refunded in full with no reason asked. Your number returns to the edition, and KAAL will not accept a future order from you.
What is the warranty?
Twenty four months on the movement, from delivery. The movement only: not cosmetic damage, not water ingress from a case opened by anyone else, not normal wear to the bracelet and glass. The movement, in full.
How long does delivery take?
Five working days, order to door, anywhere in India, shipping included in the price. Inspection happens inside those five days.
Where is KAAL made and sold from?
India. Sold direct by KAAL with no marketplace, reseller or third party fulfilment in between. Seller details are in the legal pages.
Twenty numbers. The one you want is either still there or it is not.
